Abstract
With the rising rate of depression and suicide among the elderly, the psychological intervention for the elderly has been increasingly important. This study investigates the mediating effect of life satisfaction on the pathway from perceived cultural accessibility to depression, among low-income elderly. The study employes data collected from 129 South Korean seniors over the age of 65 in poverty. The findings of the study indicate that the effects of the perceived cultural accessibility on the depression are significantly mediated by life satisfaction, while the hypothesis on the direct path from cultural accessibility to depression is rejected. Regarding the effect of each dimension of cultural accessibility, the economic accessibility appears to significantly improve life satisfaction, while the experiential accessibility has a negative influence on depression. The results suggest that financial and long-term assistance to support cultural life is needed to reduce negative psychological emotions and develop positive emotions among the elderly.
